THE POLO COAT
ID : With the perfect mix of robe-like comfort and overcoat warmth, the Polo Coat stands as a true style statement and an enduring symbol of elegance.
The Polo Coat was born in England around the turn of the 20th century as a practical piece known as the "Waiting Coat." It was designed for players to wear between the seven rounds of a polo match. The original version skipped buttons in favor of a belt and had a loose, laid-back fit, resembling a dressing gown.
By the 1920s, Brooks Brothers transformed the coat into an Ivy League favorite, on par with the Chesterfield. It also evolved into a more formal double-breasted version, featuring horn buttons and a martingale back, cementing its iconic status.
After fading into obscurity post-World War II, the Polo Coat made a major comeback in the 1980s, riding the wave of renewed interest in classic Americana. Designers quickly reestablished it as a wardrobe essential with timeless appeal.
